It is actually the root wad of two conjoined giant sequoias that fell Sept 20, 2011. The forest echoed with the sound of snap, crackle, and pop as the roots ripped out of the earth before the trees crashed to the ground. In 2010 the earth became saturated from heavy rains and a large snow pack. The trees likely fell due to soil erosion around the roots, weight, and a 20 degree lean to the southwest.
